Unit 2’s model isn’t based on commercial sales, nepotism or institutional agenda. Instead, we wanted to make a space dedicated to culture, experimentation and the development of curatorial projects. As an artist-led initiative, we know first hand how crucial it is to have access to exhibition opportunities, and how many of these opportunities come at an unworkable price point. Unit 2 had the capacity for incredible shows while remaining financially viable for the artists involved.

We are 100% volunteer run and the space was hired out at cost, meaning exhibitions can happen on a lean budget for the benefit of the artists. We take no commission on sales, and participants are welcome to run a bar, a shop or a workshop space during shows to increase their revenue. We also ran a series of in-house exhibitions structured by open calls, which were free to enter and come with a £10-20 hanging fee if selected.

At Unit 2, priority was always given to local artists and those underrepresented in the art world, and we focussed on platforming work, narratives, images, and objects from a wide variety of social contexts. We had no house style, just a commitment to art and curation in all its forms.

This initiative was run by Hole Projects CIC, a social enterprise set up to widen participation in the arts. We are queer led, trans inclusive, and pro-Palestine.
